Welcome First-Generation Students
Being the first in your family to attend college can be an exciting and rewarding experience. It can also be challenging to start out on a different path without a family member preparing you for the adventure. SUNY Old Westbury understands the journey that is ahead and offers support and guidance at every turn.
Who is a "First-Generation Student"?
The standard definition for a first-generation college student is one whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree.
How does SUNY Old Westbury support First-Generation Students?
SUNY Old Westbury is committed to the success of all our students. The primary goal of programs that support first-generation students is to promote the well-being and academic success of our first-generation Panthers. Through programs such as TRIO Support Services and Advancing Completion through Engagement (ACE), OW aims to foster campus-wide collaboration and enhance staff and faculty awareness of the unique needs of first-generation students.
