First Generation Students

Welcome First Generation Students

Being the first in your family to attend college can be an exciting and rewarding experience.  It can also be challenging to start out on a different path without a family member preparing you for the adventure.  SUNY Old Westbury understands the journey that is ahead and offers support and guidance at every turn.

Who is a "First Generation Student"?

The standard definition for a first generation college student is one whose parents or guardians did not complete a four year college degree.  The resources compiled here will also be useful to those students who may not have prior knowledge or exposure to navigating higher education and would benefit from additional support.

How does SUNY Old Westbury support First Generation Students?

SUNY Old Westbury is committed to the success of all our students.  These pages are dedicated to outlining important resources of the college to assist those who are first in their family to attend college and may not have someone to guide them.
