Intellectual Property Protection & Technology Transfer

Laws governing the protection of intellectual properties are time-sensitive and can be unforgiving. Neglect or errors in judgment can prove quite costly. For these reasons, persons conducting research at the State University of New York at Old Westbury are urged to become familiar with certain "basics" concerning the protection of intellectual properties – the basics of patent and copyright protections. The Office for Research and Sponsored Programs can provide you with such guidance.

Researchers at the University should become familiar with SUNY Patent and Copyright Policy and note that current policy may soon be updated. If your research leading to an invention was funded in whole or in part by the Federal government, it is both good and encouraging to learn a bit about the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980 and subsequent amendments. Beyond providing the initial guidance in intellectual property protection, you should know that the Office for Research and Sponsored Programs can consult and engage knowledgeable professionals from the Central Office of The Research Foundation for SUNY for a further assist.
