Each October, SUNY Old Westbury joins the nation in recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when victim advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse and their loved ones, the surrounding community and others come together in unity to help end domestic violence by bringing educational focus to this critical issue.
A highlight of the campus’ calendar in 2024 was the October 29 “Domestic Violence Awareness Forum,” an event held in the Campus Center Atrium that brought together resources from the campus and the local community.
By coming together in forums like this can we make sure those affected know we are here to support them, and that resources are available to aid them

"Everyone seems to know someone – domestic violence is more common than most realize, and its impact is far-reaching,” said Roberto Caban, chief of University Police and an organizer of the event. “Of course, we hope to raise awareness and improve understanding so that these situations occur in fewer and fewer numbers. At the same time, only by coming together in forums like this can we make sure those affected know we are here to support them, and that resources are available to aid them.”
The Forum featured eight campus departments, including University Police, Title IX, Residential Life, Counseling and Psychological Wellness Services, Center for Student Leadership and Involvement, Student Health Center, TRIO Student Services, and the Panther Community Care Center.
Equally important were the community agencies that participated, which included Northwell Health, Pride for Youth and the Safe Center of Long Island.
“I thought it was very educational because everyone needs to know what to do and what not to do when dealing with domestic violence,” said Katherina Flournoy, a Childhood Education major who attended the event. “I also hope that students will share their testimonies and provide support for those who need it.”
