Psi Chi is an international honor society whose purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology. SUNY Old Westbury became a chartered member ofPsi Chiin 1998. Numerous Old Westbury Psi Chi students have been actively engaged in independent research and have presented their research at national, regional, and local conferences, such as the American Psychological Association (APA), Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR), and Collegiate Science Technology Educational Program (CSTEP) Conference. Psi Chi offers students numerous additional advantages and opportunities that enhance their education and professional development. Such opportunities include: academic scholarships, grant funding for research, invitation to present their research at regional and national conferences, and travel funds in support of conference presentations. Student researchers also have the opportunity to have their research published in the organization’s peer-reviewed journal, Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research.
Old Westbury Chapter Membership Criteria
Undergraduate
- Completion of at least 75 credits (total)
- Completion of at least 5 psychology courses at Old Westbury
- Overall GPA ≥ 3.5
Graduate (Mental Health Counseling Program)
- Completion of the first year of the Mental Health Counseling program
- GPA ≥ 3.5
Additional Instructions
- IF you meet the above criteria, print out a copy of your degree evaluation and submit it to the Old Westbury Psi Chi faculty advisor,
- Dr. Seojung Jung, for undergraduate students;
- Dr. Marty A. Cooper, for graduate/Mental Health Counseling students; AND,
- go to psichi.org and apply for membership online.
- All students approved for acceptance into Psi Chi must also pay the one-time membership registration fee of $55.00. This fee must be paid to the Old Westbury Psi Chi faculty advisor.
After you have applied for membership online, the faculty advisor may approve your acceptance into Psi Chi. However, you will not become a fully registered member until your membership fee has been paid. Currently, this is only done by the faculty advisor, which means you must pay the fee to the advisor first. [You will be notified by the Old Westbury faculty advisor.]
- Once your fee has been paid and you are fully registered, you will receive a congratulatory email from the U.S. national Psi Chi office, along with your membership ID; your Psi Chi certificate will be sent to SUNY Old Westbury. Certificates are handed out at our annual Induction Ceremony, which takes place in Spring semester (or may be picked up by/mailed to students who cannot attend.)
- Once registered, you will also be able to access many links in the website, as well as order merchandise, including honor cords, medallions and/or stoles for graduation.

Nu Rho Psi Undergraduate Neuroscience Honor Society
The Psychology Department oversees the Neuropsychology minor and whether or not students meet the requirements to be formally inducted into the National Nu Rho Psi Undergraduate Neuroscience Honor Society. SUNY Old Westbury is the 5th College/University in New York State with an approved Nu Rho Psi Charter, and as such, it is dubbed “Chapter Epsilon” after the 5th letter of the Greek Alphabet. Furthermore, SUNY Old Westbury is the 93rd Nu Rho Psi Chapter to be approved nationally.

How to become a SUNY Old Westbury – Epsilon Chapter –
Nu Rho Psi Member:
At the end of each semester the Nu Rho Psi Organizing Committee will evaluate whether students are eligible for the Honor Society based on the following criteria:
- Have formally declared Neuropsychology as their minor.
- Have completed at least 3 semesters of or at least 9 semester hours (or equivalent) in Neuropsychology minor courses.
- Completed all required courses for the Neuropsychology minor by graduation.
- Obtain a minimum of an overall GPA of 3.2.
- Obtain a 3.75 or greater GPA for all required courses in the Neuropsychology minor (GPA is based upon academic record at SUNY Old Westbury).
- Is in good academic standing, absent of any Probation or other status.
- Submit an application to the Nu Rho Psi Organizing Committee.
The Nu Rho Psi Organizing Committee will email each eligible student to apply for the Honor Society by the end of each semester. Based upon the criteria above and two-thirds vote by the Organizing Committee, will a student become eligible for acceptance into the Honor Society. If the student is accepted into the Honor Society, they will have to pay a one-time undergraduate student induction fee of $40.00, which includes lifetime membership into Nu Rho Psi with a Professional Certificate. The membership fee is non-refundable and must be made out to Nu Rho Psi. Once accepted into the Honor Society, the student can purchase their graduation honor cords for $15.00 and any other products from the Nu Rho Psi Store online.
