Politics, Economics and Law Graduate Earns President's Medal for Scholarship

Stickell with President Butts

Joshua Stickell, a Politics, Economics, and Law major from Huntington Station, New York, has been awarded the President’s Medal for Scholarship – the highest student honor bestowed by SUNY Old Westbury.

“Looking over the submission materials as part of his nomination, I am not surprised he has earned this award,” said President Calvin O. Butts, III. “He has shown a very strong work ethic and a diligence for his studies that his professors say raises the bar for all those around him.”

Stickell graduated in December 2017, and will participate in Commencement in May 2018 where he will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Economics and Law after having earned a 4.0 grade point average at Old Westbury. Along with being a member of the College’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, Politics, Economics and Law Club, and an inductee to the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, Stickell regularly volunteers in his community. At Huntington High School, he mentors students in the “Civil War and World Court Games.”

Earning the President’s Medal is not the only honor that Stickell has received this year. Earlier this semester, it was announced that Stickell was recognized as a 2018 State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence recipient. He was one of 249 students from across 64 campuses throughout the State of New York to be selected for this top recognition.

The Old Westbury President’s Medal was created in 1986 to honor outstanding academic achievements among graduating students. To be eligible, a student must be a senior, have completed a minimum of 24 credits at Old Westbury, and have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or greater.
