The student- and community-broadcasters of OWWR - Old Westbury Web Radio recently received their 2024 "Golden Slipmat Awards" for their participation earlier this year in Vinylthon 2024. The "Golden Slipmat" is given to radio stations that play vinyl music exclusively for a full day, from midnight to midnight.
While having participated in the event for several years, this was the first year that OWWR did a full 24 hours. OWWR was only one of 220 radio stations worldwide to take part in the event.
The sense of community we experienced and demonstrated was really something meaningful and magical, and the learning that occurred was so authentic and inspiring for so many
-- Joe Manfredi, OWWR Station Manager
“The sense of community we experienced and demonstrated was really something meaningful and magical, and the learning that occurred was so authentic and inspiring for so many," said OWWR Station Manager and Media and Communications instructor Joe Manfredi about taking part in the event. “We featured students, alumni and community volunteers. They are already talking about going for the full 48 hours next year to earn the Distinguished Production Award.”
Vinylthon is an annual event for radio stations across the USA and the world who want to celebrate the format of vinyl music by playing at least one hour of vinyl-only music on the two days the event is held in April. The event was organized by the College Radio Foundation, a non-profit charity based in New Jersey, that also organizes the annual College Radio Day event which OWWR takes part in.
Vinylthon 2025 is set for April 12-13, 2025.
