Members from several Greek-letter organizations in the region came to SUNY Old Westbury to take part in a career panel during Unity Week 2024. The event, “Beyond the Letters,” featured panelists from higher education, technology, health care and finance share how being in a fraternity or sorority helped them on their journey on their career path.

“Being a part of an organization like Lambda Alpha Upsilon, you wear many hats- it teaches you business management aspects, how to interact with different organizations, and other professional skills to give you a leg up in the job search before you leave college,” said Raysel Rojas, a 2017 Finance graduate and a banker at J.P. Morgan Chase.

Shijuan Williams, a 2019 Criminology grad and member of Mu Sigma Upsilon said, “I work in higher education now, and Greek life allowed me to move with the tide. It helped me with my social skills and being able to work with people as well as my public speaking.”

The panel also provided advice to the students in attendance about following passions and interests. “Figure out what you are passionate about and run with it once you graduate. Not everyone does what they majored in,” said Rojas. Williams shared how being an RA at SUNY Old Westbury was the one job she had enjoyed and helped her decide to change fields and pursue a masters in higher education.
