Certification
- The Advanced Certificate in Teaching English as a New Language (ENL) leads to initial certification in English to Speakers of other Languages (Pre-K-12) (ESOL).
- After three years of teaching under this certification it will lead to professional certification. This program is designed for educators with a Master’s degree seeking an additional area of certification who do not wish to pursue another Master’s degree.
- This program meets all relevant New York State Education Department (NYSED) certification requirements and include the Next Generation Learning Standards.

Admissions
Candidates wishing to enter an Advanced Certificate Program must meet the following conditions as determined by the program coordinator:
- Hold NYS certification and have earned a Baccalaureate and a Graduate degree in Education.
- GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4) or equivalent in the highest earned degree.
- Completed 12 semester hours or the equivalent of study in one foreign language or plan based on advisement to complete these credit hours at SUNY Old Westbury before conclusions of the program. Equivalencies include CLEP (score of 63 earns 9 credits), AP exams (score of 3 earns 8 credits, score of 4 or 5 earns 12 credits), or OPIc and WPT (score of advanced low earns 12 credits).
- Transcripts of undergraduate and any graduate work with evidence of degree(s) conferred
- Two (2) letters of recommendation, at least one from an academic source
- Admissions essay
Additional Criteria for International Students
- TOEFL scores of paper exam = 550, computer exam = 213, internet exam = 80 or IELTS English (Cambridge) with a broad band score of 6.5.
Overseas documents evaluated by AACRAO International or WES (World Education Services).
Note:
Conditionally accepted applicants would be allowed to enroll as non-matriculated students for one semester. During this time, they will enroll in two courses in which they would need to earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
