Dr. Marty Aaron Cooper is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at SUNY Old Westbury, where he also serves as a faculty member in the Graduate Mental Health Counseling Program. Holding a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall University, Dr. Cooper specializes in LGBTQ+ mental health, multicultural competence, trauma, and identity development. His research focuses on the intersections of culture, sexuality, and mental health, with numerous peer-reviewed publications exploring topics such as transgender identity, ageism, and religious influences on sexuality.

 

Dr. Cooper brings a wealth of clinical and teaching experience to his role, having also served as an Adjunct Instructor at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. His dedication to education has been recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

 

Beyond academia, Dr. Cooper’s clinical expertise spans private practice, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and volunteer work supporting marginalized communities through organizations like Physicians for Human Rights and HealthRight International. He is a licensed psychologist in New York, Florida (telehealth), and Connecticut, and holds certifications in psychoanalysis, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy.

 

His work has been featured in national media outlets, and he frequently presents at international conferences on topics such as trauma, LGBTQ+ mental health, and cultural diversity in clinical practice. Dr. Cooper is committed to fostering inclusivity and advancing mental health equity through both research and practice.
