Diana Sukhram, professor and dean of the School of Education at SUNY Old Westbury, has been appointed as a Fulbright Specialist, a prestigious recognition awarded by the U.S. Department of State.
The program deploys highly qualified American academics and professionals to share their expertise and strengthen institutions overseas while addressing shared challenges that benefit American communities and the world.
“Dean Sukhram’s selection for this important role is no surprise,” said Provost David Lanoue. “This honor reflects her leadership in educator preparation and both her and our campus’ ongoing commitment to global engagement and academic excellence.”

As a Fulbright Specialist, Sukhram will provide insights and expertise in educator preparation, special education, research, leadership, and student success initiatives. As a member of the specialist roster, she is eligible to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at institutions across the globe.

Fulbright Specialists share their knowledge, skills, expertise, and ideas through projects designed and requested by foreign receiving institutions in over 150 countries and other areas. These institution-designed projects are recommended for selection by U.S. Embassies and Fulbright Commissions around the world, ensuring that U.S. expertise, skills, and perspectives drive progress in key academic, professional, and/or cultural sectors.
A native of Belize City, Belize, Sukhram was named dean of the School of Education in 2021 after serving in the role in an interim capacity. During her tenure, she led the school as it earned accreditation in 2022 from the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation. She joined the faculty of the School of Education in 2008 as an assistant professor and earned subsequent promotions to the ranks of associate professor and, in 2023, professor.
