SUNY Old Westbury Visited by Diabetes Awareness Art Tour

Sculptures made of sugar cubes

More than 100 students from the SUNY Old Westbury's CSTEP and STEP programs, and faculty and staff from across the College got to experience the "Know Your Sugar" cross-country tour on Friday, July 21, 2017. Sculptors Brendan Jamison and Mark Revels are traversing the United States to raise awareness on the growing health epidemic of diabetes and obesity. At their latest stop in Old Westbury, they displayed their sugar cube carvings to demonstrate the amount of sugar consumed by an average person each day.

Additionally, the Diabetes Awareness Event included a discussion presented by Ms. Jennifer Meyers, a nutritionist from Abbott Laboratories, to inform students on the relationship of over consumption of sugars in diets and diabetes. Following her presentation, a representative from the American Diabetes Association worked with students on a Diabetes Risk Test questionnaire.

Distinguished Service Professor and CSTEP & LSAMP Project Director Henry Teoh said "in addition to this informative art exhibit that empowers diabetics to live healthier lives, I'm grateful that we were able to provide a program that educates all of us on managing our sugar intake to also live a healthy lifestyle. Thank you to the American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, along with members of Abbot Laboratories for sponsoring the event."
