Visual Arts Professor has New Solo Art Exhibition

A painting by Fred Fleisher

SUNY Old Westbury Assistant Professor Fred Fleisher, Visual Arts, has a new solo exhibition "Tomorrow's People Somewhere" at the RAM Gallery (Renate Albertsen-Marton Gallery) in Brooklyn, New York. The body of work for this exhibit has taken Fleisher about four years to complete.

“My work employs images and objects that allow me to address the cultural mindscape that surrounds everyday life,” said Fleisher. “Mining aspects of life and culture, I make visible those things that might otherwise go unnoticed while making associations with disparate forms and influences. I create uncomfortable realizations in a variety of ways, whether through hybrids, alterations, or appropriations.”

Fleisher added, “I hope that people can see how some of the humorous moments in my work are also intertwined with the pain and struggle that is inherent in the everyday. By looking closely, people can see what is often overlooked: mass-production, consumerism, loss and power struggles. I use moments where the cynical collides with the hopeful. I believe that hope is essential and it can be found throughout this body of work."

The exhibition is on view until mid-November. The RAM Gallery, which has served as a community arts center and gallery since 2001,is located in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn at 886 Pacific Street, Brooklyn, NY. It has featured a diverse community of artists from Brooklyn, as well as national and international artists.

Fleisher has been a member of the SUNY Old Westbury campus community since 2003, after earning a B.F.A and B.S. from Penn State and an M.F.A from Queens College, CUNY.
