Dr. Robert Hoyte, distinguished teaching professor emeritus of the Chemistry and Physics Department, was recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) at its national meeting on August 14, 2023, in San Francisco for his selection as an ACS Fellow.

Dr. Hoyte was one of only 42 chemists worldwide selected for this year’s class of ACS Fellows. This significant honor is bestowed upon nominees for their contributions to both the science of chemistry and their service to the American Chemical Society.

Nominated by the New York Section of ACS, Dr. Hoyte was cited for “integrating impactful research on the synthesis of radiolabeled biomolecules with programmatic and hands-on mentoring and encouragement of underrepresented minority students to enter chemical and chemically related biomedical science,” and for “nearly five decades of leadership and service to ACS national committees and the New York section focusing on advancing the inclusion of the underrepresented in the chemical sciences.”

Having among the longest tenures as a member of the faculty in the history of SUNY Old Westbury, Dr. Hoyte was instrumental in the creation and development of the campus' science programs, and in the emphasis placed on the campus' now-historic commitment to undergraduate research.  A member of the full-time faculty from 1972 until his retirement in 2021, his many accomplishments on campus include his efforts to secure on an ongoing basis funds from the National Science Foundation to support scientific instrumentation  for use by faculty and students.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
