Constitution Day

SUNY Old Westbury is proud to celebrate Constitution Day each year. Constitution Day is an American federal observance recognizing the adoption of the United States Constitution.

In Recognition of Constitution Day 2025, the Office of the Provost and the Politics, Economics, and Law Department will host "Civil Rights and the Constitution," a discussion with Vice President for Institutional Excellence Elliott Dawes, J.D., LL.M.

About the Speaker

Elliott Dawes received his B.A. in Government and Africana Studies from Cornell University, his J.D. from NYU School of Law, and completed his LL.M. at Columbia Law School. He clerked for federal judges on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He then worked as a litigation associate at a major New York City law firm and later served as a trial attorney in the Educational Opportunities Section of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as the executive chief diversity officer at CUNY’s Baruch College and as the chief diversity Officer for equity and inclusion for SUNY’s Empire State University before coming to Old Westbury.
