The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), is a U.S. federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA allows schools to disclose certain directory information without consent, while allowing students to restrict or limit the release of “Directory Information”. Directory information includes information relating to a student’s name, address, e-mail address, date and place of birth, major field of study, dates of attendance, honors designation and earned degrees.
