SUNY Old Westbury student Ajón Crump is helping those who are helping others during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating a campaign to provide new sneakers to nurses. Since her campaign started in April, she has raised more than $11,500 for local health professionals.
“This idea was largely inspired by my cousin, Danielle, who is a nurse in Florida,” said Crump. “She requested a pair of Nike sneakers for her birthday. I realized that my personal contribution to this coronavirus crisis would be donating Nike sneakers to five nurses. I was planning to do a few pairs each month.”
Crump expanded upon the idea with the #NikeforNurses campaign and a GoFundMe site. The movement has gained momentum, and Crump has been interviewed about the project by Essence Magazine, BET and 1010Wins.
Crump will graduate in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Media & Communications. While on campus, Ajón is an intern at Old Westbury Web Radio (OWWR), and is a member of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society.
