Vincent Van Gogh once said, "I dream of painting and then I paint my dream."

Students recently experienced their own variant of this adage — paint included — when they participated on November 12, 2024, in "Intern for a Day at The Sherwin-Williams Company," the first session in a new initiative offered by the Office of Career Planning & Development.

"The objective of 'Intern for Day' is to show students the wide variety of employers in the marketplace, and to introduce them to the great variety of functions, roles and opportunities that are available to them as they envision their futures," said Director of Career Planning & Development Jerilyn Marinan.

The Sherwin-Williams Company is a global leader in paints and coatings, with its more than 64,000 employees supplying a broad range of highly engineered solutions for the consumer, commercial, construction, industrial, packaging and transportation markets in more than 120 countries around the world. Students from Old Westbury spent the day at the Mineola location of Sherwin-Williams.

"Some might look at a company like Sherwin-Williams and ask why such an organization would be of interest to a college student," said Marinan. "In reality, this is a company with global reach that employs people across a spectrum of activities, from sales and marketing to business and accounting functions, research and development to supply chain management. There are opportunities for students with all interests."

Hosted by Jahmari Cooper, III, the company’s district sales manager, the student "interns" spent time meeting with professionals serving in a variety of functions, touring the retail store, and learning about the varied career and growth opportunities across the Sherwin-Williams organization.

The SUNY Old Westbury Office of Career Planning & Development seeks to address the specific needs of students based on their major and career goals. Through one-on-one and small group sessions, the team assists students through such services as Major, Career, and Employment Research; Career and Personality Assessments; and Personalized Resume/Cover Letter Reviews. Career Planning & Development also works with employers to develop recruitment strategies to meet their needs, including hosting career and internship, information sessions, panel discussions and more.
