EOP Student Project Highlights College's History, Social Activism

Students striking at SUNY Old Westbury during the 1970s

Ever wondered the history of our College's dedication to social justice and student activism? Three students in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Pre-freshman Winter Program explored that very topic for their Community Learning assignment during Intersession.

In a brief video, Gulam Abbas, Zaliyah Green, and Mariana I. Mata-Diaz utilized archival footage and photos from the Old Westbury Oral History Project to explore SUNY Old Westbury's roots, and why it still matters in the present day. The project aligned with the theme of the Community Learning class - "social activism."

"I'm proud of the work our new EOP students were able to achieve in the short time dedicated to the Winter Program," said Dr. Jerrell Robinson, director of EOP. "Their interest and care related to the topic of Old Westbury's history was evident in the fine work they did with the video, and is indicative of the strong students they will become at our institution."

SUNY EOP first began admitting new first-year students for the spring semester in 2022. The Winter 2023 program represented the second cohort of EOP spring admits completing the program.
