Curriculum - Literacy Education, M.S.

Students in the program elect to complete one of three possible tracks:

  • A 30-credit track relevant to Literacy Education in a Childhood Education (Birth to Grade 6) setting.
  • A 30-credit track relevant to Literacy Education in an Adolescence Education (Grades 5-12) setting
  • A 39-credit combination of programs relevant to both Childhood and Adolescence Education settings.

Common Pedagogical Core for All Candidates: 15 credits

Childhood Literacy Education Track: 15 credits

  • ED7320 Children’s Literature for Diverse Populations
  • ED7321 Childhood Literacy Practices and Content Area Strategies
  • ED7322 Teaching Writing in Childhood
  • ED7323 Childhood Practicum in Literacy

Adolescence Literacy Education Track: 15 credits

  • ED7330 Culturally Diverse Literature for Adolescents
  • ED7331 Adolescent Literacy Practices and Content Area Strategies
  • ED7332 Teaching Writing in Adolescence
  • ED7333 Adolescent Practicum in Literacy

Combined Childhood/Adolescence Literacy Education Track: 24 credits

About the Required Practicum: A supervised practicum is the required capstone course for the degree. The practicum provides the candidates with an opportunity to work with an individual or small group at the level appropriate to their course of study. An application of diagnostic and interventional pre-assessment in a clinical or classroom situation will be required. These courses require a field experience of 50 hours.
