During conditions of a weather emergency the University will make every effort to continue administrative operations. However, certain conditions (hazardous roads, inability to keep parking lots clear) may force a cancellation of classes. This policy outlines how such cancellations will be communicated.
Old Westbury will not post an announcement that the University is open. No announcement means “business as usual.”
Should inclement weather conditions force a cancellation of classes, the following campus media are updated immediately:
- Campus-wide Email/Text (SUNYOW Alert): Sent via the Rave Communications system
Students, faculty and staff must opt in to the text notification service. Do so by going to the ConnectOW portal, finding the "Banner" card, and entering the system via the "Emergency Notification" link. Follow the steps to update your information and to provide your cell phone number. If you do not opt in and enter your cell phone number, you will receive RAVE notifications via campus email only. - Old Westbury Website: www.oldwestbury.edu
In addition, the following external media outlets will be contacted with such an announcement:
- WALK, 97.5 fm
- WHLI, 1100 am
- WKJY, 98.3 fm
- WMJC, 94.3 fm
- News 12 Long Island
Further, the campus' social media accounts are updated after an announcement has been made.
Please note: there are no weather announcements when classes are in session. Announcements are made only in the event of a delay or cancellation. It is always advisable to keep checking the website and other communication vehicles for updates since unpredictable weather may dictate ongoing changes in the campus response. All members of the University community should be prepared to react to severe weather situations while on campus.
