Research Interests

Dr. Neuwirth’s research focuses on developmental behavioral neurotoxicology (how the brain develops), molecular epigenetics (how environments and genes interact with each other), neurodegenerative diseases (how brain processes and activity reduce as a consequence of aging) with emphasis on metal neurotoxins such as lead (Pb) and other environmental contaminants. Moreover, he investigates the effects of lead poisoning and other environmental contaminants on early brain development and later life cognitive and behavioral consequences with intent to find drug therapies for ameliorating these persistent social problems. He has interest in developing and designing new behavioral technology that can measure very sensitive aspects of cognition and other learning and memory processes. In addition to understanding the relationship between environmental-gene interactions that negatively influence brain development, his research also investigates the neurobehavioral characterization of Autism in Fragile X rodent models with focus on treating cognitive deficits and social-emotional disturbances. Dr. Neuwirth has over 12 years of training in applied and 20 years training in basic research science integrating biology and psychology which translates into understanding the development of the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and the amygdala and how early brain disruption results in lifelong intellectual and social-emotional disabilities that persist as economic and public health concerns. Dr. Neuwirth is also interested in using technology to teach neuroscience techniques, behavioral testing, and neuroanatomy through the use of 180 stereoscopic first-person point-of-view virtual reality immersive learning to bring the student into the content as a modern form of applied learning.
