RE:         Changing the Designation of the College - Next Steps

Good afternoon,

I wanted to thank all those who participated in the online poll concerning the potential for our campus to make a formal change in its name to reflect the university recognition available to it via a recent New York State Education Department decision. Thank you also to those who provided comments and context for your selection, which shows me the significant interest you had and thought you gave to this question.

Nearly 300 members of our campus community responded to the poll with 96% agreeing that our campus should change its name to State University of New York at Old Westbury (SUNY Old Westbury), thereby removing the "college" reference from our charter.

Today I am informing the Chancellor and SUNY Board of Trustees that our campus requests to legally change its name to reflect the university designation available to it given changes made earlier this year in requirements made by the New York State Board of Regents. The SUNY Board of Trustees is expected to act tomorrow to give the Chancellor the authority to move forward with our request, and those of other campuses in our sector.  Those requests would be submitted to the New York State Education Department for review and final determination.

Thank you, again, to all who participated.

Tim
