The Community Action, Learning, and Leadership program at SUNY Old Westbury has been recognized by the Cornell Cooperative Extension with its “Outstanding Community Cooperator Award” for the program’s positive impact in the Suffolk County community.

The CALL program was one of six awardees recognized for efforts that contribute to the ongoing mission of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which works across New York state to bring experience and research together in pursuit of economic vitality, ecological sustainability and social well-being.

“Earning the Outstanding Community Cooperator Award reflects the very heart of the CALL program: Our commitment to civic engagement, collaborative leadership and meaningful service,” said Liz Dysart, director of the program. “This recognition affirms that when students, partners, and communities work together with purpose, we create a lasting impact that extends far beyond the classroom.”

Dysart, Student Placement Specialist Dilcia Erazo, and the CALL program were nominated for the award by the CCE Suffolk County Farm. Through the SUNY Empire State Service Corps, the CCE Suffolk County Farm and CALL collaboration has provided student fellows from Old Westbury with opportunities to apply their learning through first-hand experiences that benefit the local community.

The goal of CALL is to create opportunities for Old Westbury students to engage in service through education, leadership development, and meaningful community engagement experiences that connects to students' degree and career goals.

Melissa Benitez ’26, a senior student majoring in Childhood Education, served as a fellow at the Little Farmer’s Preschool at the CCE Suffolk County Farm during the 2024-2025 academic year. While there, she taught students using hands-on learning activities in fields related to agriculture; science, technology, engineering and math; and healthy living.

“This experience has helped me grow so much, both personally and professionally,” said Benitez. “I’ve learned lessons I’ll carry with me into my future career, and I’m so thankful for the guidance, support, and encouragement I've received along the way.”
