For the approximately 1,000 students new to the State University of New York at Old Westbury, their OWN Experience officially begins when they meet President Timothy E. Sams during the annual Fall Convocation for New Students.

Amidst the excitement of getting adjusted to new roommates, juggling class schedules, and buying supplies, the Fall Convocation offers a chance for first-year and transfer students to come together as a class and experience one of the key academic traditions of the SUNY Old Westbury campus.  The formality and scope of this ceremony serves as a bookend to Commencement.

In addition to President Sams, this year's event will feature:

  • Faculty Speaker:  Dr. Danielle Lee '10, Associate Dean for Academic Institutes & Programs in the School of Arts and Sciences and Assistant Professor of English
  • Alumni Speaker:  Earl Thomason Jr. '15, Interim Deputy Director, Empire State Development: Harlem Community Development Corporation
