 The SUNY Old Westbury School of Education offers degrees designed to serve the demands of both current teaching professionals and those who hope to enter the teaching field.  

Degrees offered are:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching in Adolescence Education (7-12):  Leads to initial certification for aspiring teachers and career-changers seeking to advance their careers as teachers of Biology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Spanish.
  • Master of Science in Childhood Special Education: Provides a pathway for Initial/Professional certification in Childhood Special Education and professional certification for those already holding certification in Early Education or Childhood Education.
  • Master of Science in Literacy Education: Leads to initial certification in Literacy for all who aspire and leads to professional certification for those who hold initial or provisional teaching certification in other fields.

Master of Arts in Teaching - Adolescence Education (7-12)

Thinking about changing careers and becoming a teacher?

Five different degrees are offered with each leading to initial certification for aspiring teachers of Biology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Spanish.

Adolescence brings many challenges and adjustments for students in grades 7-12.  Central to the success of middle and high school students are teachers armed with the knowledge, skills and commitment to student development that, when combined, foster achievement.  You'll get that preparation at SUNY Old Westbury.

M.S. in Literacy Education

Learn how to prepare readers and writers from the earliest grades through high school

Graduates of the program demonstrate specialized pedagogical skills in the areas of digital literacies, literacy assessment, and various content area strategies.

With this preparation, they are then ready to serve in school settings in such positions as positions as reading specialists, literacy coaches, and classroom teachers.

M.S. in Childhood Special Education

New York and the nation are facing a shortage of qualified special education professionals

Improve the lives of learners with special needs through a program that teaches innovative practices and methods related to classroom management, developmental disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, literacy, learning difficulties, and assessment. 

The program is designed for candidates who are career changers as well as candidates who possess initial certification in Early Childhood Education and/or Childhood Education.

Graduates are positioned to advocate as teachers in schools and other forums for learners with special needs while also engaging in research-based instruction.
