Title: Neuroendocrine Alterations in Fragile X Syndrome
Presenter: Dr. Abdeslem El Idrissi, Professor, Department of Biology, College of Staten Island - CUNY
Discussant: The Neuro-Psych Club – Mohammad Mian
Description: Dr. El Idrissi’s research examines the relationships between the downregulation of the GABA-A receptors, voltage-gated calcium channels (VSCCs), and somatostatin in the Fragile X mouse brain. The GABA-A receptors and VSCCs synergistically perform a critical role in mediating activity-dependent developmental processes that when disrupted can cause altered gene expression and lead to developmental delays contributing to Fragile X Syndrome.
The Brain Awareness Week Lecture Series provides a unique opportunity for experts in the field to actively engage students in their cutting-edge neuroscience research. Through these lectures, students, as well as other campus community members, will be provided with a broad range of neuroscience related education. These lecture series also supplement the courses offered at SUNY Old Westbury as part of the Neuropsychology Minor.
