Alt Resident Assistant Application 2023-2024

The Office of Residence Life Is looking for Alternative RAs for the Spring 2024 semester! Alterative RAs are an important part of the RA Selection process! 

Thank you for your interest in applying for a position with the SUNY Old Westbury Office of Residence Life. Resident Assistants are an integral part of the Office of Residence Life. These para-professional staff members have the most direct and consistent contact with residential students living across our residence halls. Resident Assistants must possess a desire to emulate a positive experience at OW and within the residence halls, an open mind to diverse student personalities, cultures, and identities, a willingness to step outside of their comfort zone, and set an example for fellow students to model their behavior. The primary responsibilities of Resident Assistants include but are not limited to:

• Must be flexible regarding time (including nights and weekends).

• Be able to relate to a wide variety of individuals and needs.

• Provide informal counsel and support for residents.

• Plan programs and activities for residents that address their needs.

• Perform essential administrative tasks.

• Be sensitive to diversity in lifestyles.

• Employ appropriate customer service standards.

• Must adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior.

• Explain and enforce the policies of College and Office of Residential Life

• Outside employment, internships, and extracurricular activities may not collectively exceed 15 hours per week.

  • RA’s may not student teach or co-op.
  • RA's May not hold an executive board position in SGA and RHA during their employment as an RA.

Candidates for the Resident Assistant position must meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain a minimum 2.50 semester and cumulative GPA.
  • Remain free from academic or disciplinary probation
  • Must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States for SUNY Old Westbury and Provide I9 documentation. 

Please note :

  • All applicants must be able to attend RA Training January 16th-January 24th
  • Positions are not guaranteed. 
  • If you are selected as an alternative resident assistant, you will be placed on standby until an RA position is offered to you.  
  • Candidates for the Alt RA position will participate in an individual interviews process

Interview process starts Wednesday January 10, 2024
Acceptance letters 5PM  Friday January 12, 2024
RA Training starts Tuesday, January 16th.
All applicants must be able to attend RA Training January 16th -January 24th.
