Bilingual Extension Program

Welcome to the Bilingual Extension Program at SUNY-Old Westbury!

Bilingualism/multilingualism is extremely widespread and is in fact the norm in today’s world. Schools must cultivate the valuable linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills that emerging bilingual students bring with them. The Bilingual Extension Program provides teacher candidates with a foundation for understanding and working with emerging bilingual students in diverse educational settings. Teacher candidates will develop teaching practices and caring relationships with emerging bilingual students that promote identity and academic development in two (or more) languages. Graduates of the Bilingual Extension Program at SUNY-Old Westbury will enter the field prepared to empower emerging bilingual students, their families and their communities.

Admission to the Bilingual Extension Program

For admission to the Bilingual Extension Program, teacher candidates must be admitted to the School of Education at SUNY-Old Westbury and demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English by taking the Oral Proficiency Interview-computer (OPIc) and the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
