One graduate, five questions, go…
Mohanlall Teloki '04 (Childhood Education)
Director, Office of Student Life, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
How did your education prepare you for what you are doing today?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Old Westbury. Not only did I receive a comprehensive education in the classroom, but I was also profoundly influenced by the additional extracurricular opportunities. I was challenged by esteemed faculty from various departments, and these experiences equipped me with the skills essential for success in pursuing numerous career paths post-graduation. Although my aspiration to educate future generations in the classroom wasn't fulfilled, I found myself drawn back to higher education. The people and experiences I encountered at Old Westbury greatly influenced this decision. Throughout my tenure, I felt supported, cared for, and encouraged, and I wanted to pay that forward.
What is your greatest professional accomplishment or recent professional accomplishment to date?
The work I engage in, the students and colleagues I collaborate with, and the impact of the Office on the lived experiences of our students bring immense joy to me. Two milestone events I eagerly anticipate each year are orientation and graduation, marking the beginning and end of our students' college journey. Recently, I was tasked by the Deans of Student Affairs to tackle a significant barrier to student learning and success: food insecurity. Situated in a food desert, our campus posed unique challenges. My team and I dedicated ourselves to crafting a sustainable model to ensure our students were nourished and primed for success both inside and outside the classroom. After many months of concerted effort, we unveiled the Kitchen, offering students access to a diverse array of food options. Witnessing their gratitude and the tangible impact we made on their lives motivates me to strive for excellence each day. Collaborating with my colleagues and students to address their needs is profoundly rewarding.
What programs do you support at SUNY Old Westbury, and why?
As an alum and ambassador for Old Westbury, I actively bring and share my experiences wherever I go. I am delighted to lend support to honor societies, scholarships, mentoring programs, the alumni association, and advocate for causes that profoundly impacted my journey as a first-generation and immigrant college student. During my tenure as a member of the alumni association, we diligently worked to support students in all aspects of their lives through various scholarship initiatives.
Do you have advice for current students?
While some may be impressed solely by the reputation of an institution's name, what truly impressed me about Old Westbury was its people. Nestled in the heart of Long Island, Old Westbury is a hidden gem — a community of caring and compassionate individuals deeply invested in your success. I urge you to actively engage and participate, to be present and involved. Remaining anonymous is a disservice; keep your eyes fixed on your goals. Stay laser-focused, especially when faced with challenges. When the storms inevitably come, lean on your support network of peers, faculty, staff, and campus resources. Seek out mentorship and share your aspirations with them. They will guide you toward success and help you navigate any obstacles that arise.
What is your favorite memory of, and/or spot on, on campus?
It was both an honor and a privilege to serve the Student Government Association for three consecutive terms. Throughout my tenure, I had the distinct privilege of being present in rooms and spaces where I could amplify the student voice. Advocating for the students I represented led to numerous impactful changes in both the student experience and institutional offerings, which proved instrumental. Collaborating with departments across the campus to enhance services and resources, from the establishment of the student union to the creation of a new academic village, significantly impacted student learning and pride. Returning to campus and witnessing the transformed landscape, along with the positive impact on the student experience, brings me immense joy.
