Dr. Alejandro Rivera ’05 (Childhood Education)
Principal, George A. Jackson Elementary School, Jericho, New York

How did your education prepare you for what you are doing today?

My education at SUNY Old Westbury prepared me perfectly for my role today as an educator. I learned from distinguished faculty who were deeply knowledgeable in the area of teaching and learning. I was able to connect with fellow students who all shared unique experiences that helped me better understand our education system across diverse communities. Our conversations and activities were always relevant to the work that had to be done in (and out of) the classroom.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment or recent professional accomplishment to date?

Being named principal of the George A. Jackson Elementary School in Jericho was a dream come true. I was entrusted with leading the students, families, teachers, and staff of one of the top schools in the country. I take great pride knowing that the school community values my work and credentials.

What programs do you support at SUNY Old Westbury, and why?

My heart is within the School of Education. I serve as an external member of the Advisory Council and am always willing to speak with students within the department whenever asked. The learning I received from the School of Education is the foundation of my success. I will forever be appreciative of the education I received here at SUNY Old Westbury.

Do you have advice for current students?

My advice for current students is to believe in yourself 100%. No matter the obstacles put in front of you, if you are confident in your abilities and work hard each day, others will take notice. Also, make connections wherever possible. You never know who will help guide you to greatness.

What is your favorite memory and/or spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus was the library. I went there whenever I had time in-between classes. It was a great place to be alone with my thoughts and reflect on my learning. I was also able to connect with other students and learn more about happenings within the college. It was just a great place to find relaxation.
