Marissa Disla '21 (American Studies)

Career and College Readiness Manger at New Dawn Charter High School

How did your education prepare you for what you are doing today?

I think my experiences outside of the classroom prepared me to be where I am today. Being a student leader, I learned how to work with different personalities. I also networked with a lot of my peers who I still work closely with till this day. Most importantly my leadership experiences helped build my resume which benefited me when applying for graduate school.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment or recent professional accomplishment to date?

My greatest professional accomplishments so far have been creating and becoming the Co-Founder of Let’s Heal, which is a nonprofit organization that focuses on breaking the stigma associated with Mental Health within the Black community.

What programs do you support at SUNY Old Westbury, and why?

I support all the leadership programs at Old Westbury but more specifically the Student Government Association. I was a member all four years and developed a lot of great friendships and made many memories there.

Do you have advice for current students?

My advice for current students would be to try everything! If you see an email about an opportunity, or a poster and you feel slightly interested in it, just go check it out. As a college student you should try your best to explore and take advantage of the opportunities around you in order to figure out what you are passionate about. .

What is your favorite memory of your time on campus?

My two favorite spots on campus would have to be the sandwich shop, and the CSLI office.
