The Literacy Education Graduate Program at SUNY Old Westbury hosts a literacy clinic for students in Pre-K through Grade 12 each spring. Graduate students, who are earning their Master’s Degree and Literacy Certification, work with the students on reading, writing, oral language, and listening skills. The graduate students have their New York State Initial Certification in childhood education, bilingual education, special education, or an adolescent content area - and they are working in area school districts.

The literacy clinic provides individualized instruction for students. The graduate students work on developing the reading and writing identities of the students in the clinic. They plan and implement systematic and explicit instruction that will support the literacy needs of the students. During the clinic, the graduate students are supervised, supported, and coached by Old Westbury faculty.

The literacy clinic runs throughout the spring semester, which is the end of January through mid-May. The dates for the 2024 Literacy Clinic are:

  • January - 29
  • February - 5, 12, 26
  • March - 4, 11, 25
  • April - 1, 8, 15, 29
  • May - 6, 13, 20
