James Mwaura recently joined SUNY Old Westbury as director of purchasing, a position responsible for planning, directing, and managing the College’s procurement and purchasing functions.
“We are pleased to have Mr. Mwaura join our business and finance team,” said College President Calvin O. Butts, III. “His previous experience working for both SUNY and the State of New York will serve him well as we count on his expertise in making our purchasing department a resource for all constituencies.”
In addition to overseeing the Office of Purchasing and its staff, Mwaura will interact with the campus community to ensure that goods and services are obtained in the most practical and economical manner, while complying with the applicable laws, regulations, policies and guidelines. Mwaura also now oversees the College’s Minority and Women Business Enterprises, and Service-Disabled Veteran purchasing programs, and state participation goals.
A resident of Kew Gardens, New York, Mwaura previously worked for SUNY Purchase as associate director of purchasing and accounts payable, and worked for the New York State Office of Mental Health as an assistant business officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management from Stony Brook University.
