The Old Westbury College Foundation, Inc. has awarded two $5,000 TFCU/Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarships to SUNY Old Westbury students Benjamin Jack and Magdalena Zielinska. Offered through a generous donation by Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in the nation, the educational scholarships reflects TFCU’s ongoing efforts to provide support and encouragement to local students within the communities it serves.

Magdalena Zielinska, a junior, is an accounting major. She is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School and lives in Lindenhurst. TFCU also awarded the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship to Magdalena in 2016 when she was a sophomore at SUNY Old Westbury.

Benjamin Jack, a junior, is also majoring in accounting. He is a graduate of Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills and lives in Deer Park.

Nicholas Maletta, for whom this scholarship is named, began serving on TFCU’s Board of Directors in 1983. In 1991 he was elected Vice Chairman, a position he held until his passing in 2012. In recognition of his 29 years of selfless volunteer work, the $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship Award was established for students who have graduated from a Long Island high school and who are enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury’s School of Business.

“The recipients of the two TFCU Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship awards are on the road to achieving their educational goals. A strong academic foundation is critical for long-term career success. At TFCU, we are committed to recognizing academic excellence and supporting outstanding students like Magdalena and Jack,” said Robert G. Allen, CEO/President of TFCU and a 1985 graduate of SUNY Old Westbury.

SUNY Old Westbury students applying for the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship must be enrolled in a degree program of the School of Business and meet other criteria. Applicants must submit an original essay of a minimum of 500 words, on the following: Describe the most challenging obstacle you have faced, what you did to overcome it, and what you have learned from the experience.
