Wireless Connection on Campus

(Laptop wireless cards are available for loan at the Library Circulation Desk)
WiFi aka 802.11b wireless network: The College provides this system for the convenience of students to access educational, class related material. The 802.11b network standard has many well known security vulnerabilities. Therefore, the College makes no claims as to the security of this network or its suitability for other purpose, students use it at their own risk.

Faculty and Staff are specifically prohibited from using the wireless network to access campus administrative systems due to these well known security issues.

The Campus Center and acedemic village has new wireless internet capabilites throughout the building. Any students or falculty members with wireless capable devices would be able to connect to the campus wireless network.

The open unsecure wireless network that students can connect to are:

  • unsecure_ow

The secure wireless network that only faculty & Staff could to are:

  • oldwestbury_staff

** Note faculty members must go in person to the Compuer Services Office for WEP keys.

To connect to a specific wirless network, please make sure that your wireless device is worknig properly before you try to connect.

Basic Steps to connecting to different Wireless networks.
For windows XP users

  • Disable the wired network adapter, this could cause IP conflicts
  • Right click wireless connection (located on the bottm right of the task bar next to the time)
  • Select properties
  • Then select advance button
  • Select Access-point (infrastructure) networks only
  • Then select the wireless network that you would like to connect to.
  • Check off automatically connect to non-preferred networks box.
  • Select connect button.
