The Research Foundation is a private, nonprofit educational
corporation that administers externally funded contracts and grants for
and on behalf of the State University of New York. Since its establishment
in 1951, the Research Foundation has facilitated research, education,
and public service at 30 state-operated SUNY locations. The Foundation
provides
the independence and administrative flexibility to respond quickly to
the special demands of sponsored programs in a manner that facilitates
their
scientific or technical execution; these are needs that could not be
as easily accommodated through state processes. The legal applicant/recipient
for an institutional grant is The Research Foundation of SUNY on behalf
of SUNY/College at Old Westbury, P.O. Box 9, Albany, NY 12201.
The Research
Foundation's structure is divided between decentralized
and centralized campuses. Decentralized campuses are those more independent
of Research Foundation Central and possessing more control over decision-making
at the campus level. They are the four university centers (Albany,
Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook), which are also the major research
centers.
Centralized campuses are those still directly controlled by the Research
Foundation Central Office, providing services not easily affordable
by the smaller SUNY campuses with smaller research programs. The remainder
of the SUNY campuses (including Old Westbury) fall into this category.
For each of these campuses, there is a Contracts and Grants Specialist
at the Research Foundation Central Office who is responsible for assisting
the University Colleges in the finer, more complicated points of a
grant
proposal or administration.
