A central goal in each course offered within American Studies is to educate students about the United States' rich and full history and to use that history as a prism through which the present and future is considered. American Studies courses emphasize the diversity of America and the day to day lives of ordinary people.
In the classroom, students learn about social inequality, in particular ethnic and gender inequality and the ways various organizations and people have attempted to change American society. Out of the classroom, students have the opportunity to participate in internships in educational institutions, social service agencies, media organizations and more.
