Personal Counseling

Whatever your concerns, personal counseling with an Old Westbury counselor is a good place to start. Personal counseling provides an opportunity to learn how to resolve personal issues that are confusing or distressing, talk with someone who is not involved in your everyday life, is professionally trained, and can give feedback from a different perspective. It is an opportunity to learn new skills and different ways of looking at things.

The Counseling & Career Center offers short-term individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, and family counseling for a wide range of personal issues. Students come to counseling for many reasons. For example, you may have concerns about relationships with significant people in your life or life decisions. Most people come for counseling when their usual way of handling problems aren’t working well. Usually, people feel upset in some way – sad, depressed, confused, or angry. The following is a list of some common problems:

  • Adjusting to college
  • Depression / sadness
  • Anxiety / stress / panic
  • Eating problems / body image or weight concerns
  • Death or loss of someone close to you
  • Family problems
  • Relationship issues
  • Sexual identity or orientation issues
  • Anger
  • Difficulty concentrating / performance or creative blocks
  • Alcohol / Drug use
  • Struggling to become independent from parents, but also maintain a relationship with family
  • Coping with a traumatic experience such as a sexual assault or unwanted pregnancy
  • Achievement / motivation concerns
  • Worry about being unique or different (i.e., culture, race, ethnicity, religion)

There are several other reasons why people come for counseling. If you confront an issue that is difficult to manage on your own, call the Counseling & Career Center at (516) 876-3053 and enlist our support. We are here to offer you the support you may need to achieve personal and academic success.

Counseling is free and confidential. For more information about confidentiality, read our confidentiality page.
