Placement Tests

The Academic Advisement Center administers the College's Placement Examination in Mathematics, where appropriate.  Incoming students are required to take the College's Placement Examination in Mathematics to be placed in the most appropriate mathematics class, unless they meet one of the exemption requirements listed below. 

To schedule your exam, please:

  1. Call the Academic Advising Center at 516-876-3044 to reserve your seat.
  2. Bring photo identification (i.e. driver's license, college ID, passport, etc.) on the date of your exam.
  3. Bring pencils (scrap paper is permitted to be used for the Math Examination and will be provided)
  4. Any four-function, scientific, or graphic calculator may be used unless it is listed on the prohibted calculator list found here: www.actstudent.org/faq/answers/calculator.html

Exemptions from the Placement Exam

For Freshmen

Students may be exempt from the exam under the following conditions:

  • A score of 85 or higher on the "Math Algebra II/Trigonometry Regents" or equivalent.
  • A score of 3 or higher on the College Board's Math AP Exam.
  • A College credited course in algebra or Statistics(*) with a grade of C or better.

For Transfer Students

Students may be exempt from the exam under the following conditions:

  • A score of 3 or higher on the College Board's Math AP exam.
  • A College credited course in algebra or Statistics(*) with a grade of C or better.
(*)If a student intends to major in math, CIS, MIS the natural sciences or any area of Business, and has taken no other college-level math courses other than Statistics, he or she will need to take a math placement exam to determine an appropriate math course to begin with or be registered in MA1020 College Algebra.
