Many times, students ask "Why study another language?" Foreign languages give added knowledge about other cultures, traditions and lifestyles. Further, they can lead to numerous opportunities to see the world and it makes you a more desirable candidate for jobs in nearly any profession.
The Department of Modern Languages at SUNY College at Old Westbury prides itself on preparing students for teaching and non-teaching positions in today's world. With courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, and American Sign Language, students are given considerable orientation toward the target cultures, both by assuring the presence on campus of native speakers and by offering an array of overseas and on-campus study programs.
The department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs for prospective students. On the undergraduate level, students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language, Hispanic Literature and Culture.
Graduate students can study in the College's Adolescence Education: Spanish (7-12) programs, through which candidates can earn either a Master of Arts in Teaching or a Master of Science in Education degree.
