Placement Exam

All incoming students must have Math and Writing placements prior to seeing an academic advisor. The Academic Advising Center administers placement exams where appropriate.

Math Placement Exam

This is a computerized test. Most students complete the exam in approximately 30 minutes, but you can take longer if necessary.

You may obtain the sample math questions at the following links:

Questions on the Numerical Skills/Prealgebra, and Algebra http://www.act.org/compass/sample/pdf/numerical.pdf

College Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry http://www.act.org/compass/sample/pdf/geometry.pdf

Students who fall into one of the following categories are exempt from the math test:

  • Students who have taken Regents Math III or Math B and scored a 75 or higher on the Regents Exam.
  • Students who have taken College Algebra, College-level Precalculus, College-level Calculus and/or College-level Statistics.

However, students who are majoring in Business, Math, Math Education, Computer Science or Natural Sciences who have only taken statistics and have not taken College Algebra or higher will need to take the Math Placement Exam.

Writing Placement Exam

Effective in June 2007, Writing Placement Exams were eliminated from the enrollment process; instead, writing placements will be made according to the following table:

All new freshmen
A score of 3 or higher on an English AP exam
Transfer credits of English Composition I with C or higher
Transfer credits of English Composition II with C or higher

All students will be assessed their writing skills on the first day of their Composition courses.A Writing test given on the first day in all composition courses will be used to confirm initial placements: experience shows that in a few cases the test will result in changes to the level of writing course or in assignment to an ESOL class.

* Students who fall into one of the following categories are given a writing exam prior to course registration:

  • Students who have successfully completed (with a grade of "C" or better) an English Composition II course at another college, but have not yet taken an English Composition I course will need to take the Placement Exam
  • Students who have successfully completed (with a grade of "C" or better) an English Composition II course at another college, but passed an English Composition I course with C- or lower are required to repeat English Composition I. However, the students have an option to take the Placement Exam

If you are unsure as to whether you need to take a placement examination, please do not hesitate to call our office at 516-876-3044.
